They had longed for the open sea since the moment the storms had settled. Finally, it seemed safe enough for the captain and his crew to collect the last provisions at the docks and continue the expedition.
The sun was about to kiss the ocean goodnight when the captain rang his bell, announcing their immediate departure. They couldn’t wait for daybreak this time. The sun’s position was to perfect, leading them in the right direction, then to wait any longer.
As the sails took wind and the ship gained in speed, the safe harbour slowly disappeared behind the stern. Whether they would find what they were looking for was written in the stars, and only the sun, a silent observer of the sky, could see ahead and know for sure.
Then, the captain scribbled some words on a small piece of parchment and attached it to one of the carrier pigeons, hoping it would reach land before exhaustion.
My Queen,
On we sail into the unknown. We shan’t return empty-handed.
May the sea have mercy with us,
Captain Morgan.
