Abducted Sleep

It was dark again, and with the lights broken, he knew he should go to sleep. Despite this realisation, endless thoughts kept pounding through his skull. One last game, it wasn’t even that late yet. His phone had plenty battery charge left and the internet connection reached just far enough to remain under the comfort of his cosy blanket.

Three taps on the screen, that’s all, and he was submerged into a different world. A world where he was in charge, with an ever-growing cash balance, customised icons, and freedom that the real world could never offer. “Place your bets,” an animated voice announced before the match started. And so they did. Surely, they assumed, his luck had to run-out eventually.

However, until now, his strategy seemed bulletproof. If only it was all real, then he wouldn’t just be a meaningless God of an online game. Eventually he logged off and suddenly discovered that he’d played all night. Crap, I did it again, he thought shamefully, another night’s sleep wasted. Work wasn’t going to be easy.
