A Kind Encounter

She stood at the counter of a coffee place in the middle of the train station, where she would wait for her parents to arrive. As she pondered the menu a woman in front of her abruptly turned around to kindly invite her, without any reason, for a coffee. Perplexed that the offer was genuine she said yes. The heart-warming gesture felt oddly refreshing after a long train ride where everyone, including herself, stared emotionlessly at a device in their hands.

She ordered a Caramel Macchiato while chitchatting with the tall woman in a blue dress, wearing high heels, and flowers for her partner in hand. They exchanged pleasantries until the kind strangers got her drink and departed with a smile to sit by a window and read.

Still standing by the counter, she recalled the statement about her British accent. Funny, since the only British thing about her was the TV show she had watched earlier on the train. How easily some accents found their way into our behaviours.

Before she left to meet her parents, she walked up to the woman again to share her still buzzing fascination with the unexpected but inspiring kindness that still existed in our hectic world. Then she walked away and enjoyed the first sip while a ray of the sun touched her face.
