Haven’t we suffered enough? We already fill our history books with countless tragedies. There are so many, we can pick and choose the horrid ones that allow us to point fingers instead of looking at ourselves. We allow ourselves to forget so many things that it’s no wonder life is sometimes referred to as a roller-coaster. We endure the ups and downs only to end where we started and if we choose to stay on the ride, we go through them over and under again.
Can’t we do better?
We are given so many tools by our society that it is almost embarrassing to see mistakes, hate, and terror repeated over and over again by self-serving and greedy individuals.
Yet, we only have ourselves to blame. No tyrant takes power by snipping his fingers (that, he can only do once those who oppose him are fighting for their lives in the sandpit), instead, he preys on those who can be manipulated to stand behind him, only to drop them like a hot potato, once the deed is done. We trust those who listen to our fears, but we sometimes forget to check who is listening. We shouldn’t neglect that self-interest is a prime instinct, helping us to survive and procreate. Thinking a leader will only act in our interest is delusional. However, there is a difference between the incapability to please everyone’s needs and exploiting them to serve only your own.
As a species, we must finally overcome this inherent fear from each other, just because we are different, and accept that we can all offer something to improve our universe.
We’ve come a long way from throwing rocks at rabbits and collecting berries while the lions are sleeping. You’d think our cognitive reasoning would have developed just far enough to read a book and say, “maybe we shouldn’t do that again”. Because it would be nice to know that one day, children of future generations could watch the news without drawing constant comparisons to their recent history class.
